Coventry Sphinx put in a hard working performance but were beaten 3-1 at home by a young West Bromwich Albion side in the First Round of the Birmingham Senior Cup.
Lee Knibbs’ side hit the woodwork before Nick Clayton-Phillips, put the Baggies ahead in the 24th minute after capitalising on a defensive error.
Sphinx started to get back into the game and were level on the stroke of half-time when Rhys Deehan curled a free kick high into the net.
West Brom were back in front in the 51st minute when Kyle Jameson tapped home following a free kick and added to that when Clayton-Phillips ran through to fire home in the 58th minute.
Sphinx to their credit kept going and hit the woodwork again, were denied a penalty and had substitute Ryan Harkin fire over but the damage had been done and Sphinx’s cup involvement was over for another season.
Coventry Sphinx are at home again on Saturday to Rocester with kick off at 3pm.
